PCH DNS Anycast Service

Packet Clearing House, as part of its service to the Internet Community, offers anycasted secondary DNS service for country code top level domains (ccTLDs) and other critical infrastructure domains. This service is generally provided free of charge to ccTLD operators for developing countries.

PCH provides name service for these ccTLDs through an anycast system, with about 100+ locations on six continents. A full list of current locations is available on the PCH peering web page.

Anycast is a routing technique used to distribute servers in multiple locations using a single IP address. It is defined and enhanced in a series of RFCs, most notably RFC 1546. PCH has been involved in anycast DNS operations from the beginning.

PCH operates its servers at Internet exchange points to reach a wide range of network users. These exchange points range in size from the world's major Internet hubs, including PAIX Palo Alto, Equinix Ashburn, LINX, and HKIX, to local exchange points in poorly connected regions, where our services will remain available to local users in the event of a satellite link failure.

Our service supports DNS-Sec, giving domain operators who use it enhanced DNS security.

While our main service offering is targeted at small ccTLDs for developing countries, we also use our anycast platform to host dedicated anycast servers for larger DNS operators. Domain operators take advantage of our global footprint and routing infrastructure, while operating their own servers configured to their own specifications. The platform provides connectivity via both Internet Protocol version 4 and Internet Protocol version 6.

If you would like PCH to host a secondary DNS for your ccTLD, or would like to discuss options for hosting dedicated anycast servers, please send mail to
